If I have to look back and recall the events in my previous and present jobs, I am seeing now a certain trend. Something happens to my direct boss or the person who was directly responsible to hire me -- either they get fired or get a very good promotion, just within a year or even barely a few months of me coming on board.
So with such events, I always seem to be caught in an uncertain situation and find myself having to deal with all the transitions happening without a boss. If I have to recall, two former bosses of mine were fired, and the other two simply got a new offer. And now, my current boss is moving on to head the biggest department in our company and to be part of the management team. There are certain plans for me but I don't know if I would want to consider yet.
My boss is certainly "selling" me to the top management. I told him, I just want to maintain my flexibility and of course I still have to discuss with him this nagging feeling of mine to cut my working hours (unless we can work out an agreement for me to work twice a week from home).
So people in the office are asking me all the time, what is going to happen. A lot of people are eyeing my boss' position but he is certainly bidding time until decisions are made.
